Clearly, people are torn up about building vs buying their workbench. I still have this bench and when I eventually get a larger shop, I will bring it. The easiest way to build a sturdy basic DIY workbench for your garage or shop. All you need is a few 2x4s and a sheet of plywood. I did not build my bench, I found it for sale in a barn / workshop. Sturdy and solid — nothing on this workbench is fragile. Even the metal vise features heavy wooden jaws, so it has a wide clamping surface and holds a pair of bench dogs. This clamping station is a great multitasker.

One side of the top hosts an array of hold-downs. The other supports your pipe clamps. Combining traditional joinery and modern materials is the key. I used good plywood for the top to ensure I would have a smooth, durable surface to work on. Just like in step 2, I attached a full sheet on top of this top frame. If you modified the size of the sheet in step 2, do the same here—just trim to size. They come in kits of different sizes depending on what size you make your bench.

If you are adding these as well, you will need to follow the instructions to trim down your top panel from step 5 for your traks to fit into. What I did was follow the instructions to drill the holes for the bolts through the surface I was mounting to. I just drilled all the way through my 2x4s. You can see this in my video above. Now, this workbench is large and could have a tendency to sag in the middle.

You could add some supports in the middle to help prevent that, but I wanted this space open. So, instead, I attached some 2x4s along the end to provide a little extra support and help prevent excessive sagging. To add some extra storage and organization to the workbench, I installed some panels and a shelf on the end. NOTE: Double check your own shelf length and cut accordingly.

This has already become my most used piece in the shop. Attach the shelf brackets to the two strips. The heavier duty the shelf bracket, the better. The top of the bracket is flush with the top surface of the upper strip.
